"Full of Fire, the first track to surface from the Knife’s forthcoming Shaking the Habitual, is a 9-minute banger that more than lives up to its title. Blessedly, the duo’s stylistic touchstones– the same tricks that countless groups have lifted over the last six years– are present and accounted for, as if they’re picking up exactly where they left off. There’s the fierce, multi-tiered rhythm track, Karin Dreijer‘s malevolent, ever-mutating vocal incantations, and the thoroughly frightening approach to dance music that spurred Mark Pytlik to coin the phrase “haunted house” in his review of 2006’s Silent Shout.
Yet, the reclusive Swedish siblings are not simply donning the same old cloaks this time around. The fever-pitch the track establishes and never releases is far more industrial than they’ve ever sounded before. “Questions and the answers can take very long,” growls Dreijer over the fierce, mechanistic backdrop. True enough, but in this case it’s been more than worth the wait.”
The Knife will be playing this years Pukkelpop Festival in Belgium on Saturday August 17th. Also on the bill: The xx, Nine Inch Nails, Bat For Lashes, Skunk Anansie… plus more TBA
